Spider in the lcd panel of the optima!
« on: September 21, 2004, 12:29:39 am »
I could not believe that a spider got into the lcd control panel and was still alive. I thought that the lcd panel has some sort of a seal to prevent water from getting in.
Wondering if that is a common thing?

This panel seems to be protected from outside water running into the display, but I've never really looked at the underside of the display.  I'm changing the water this weekend, maybe I'll give it a peek and see when I have the service panels removed.

Us too!!  We've only had our Optima for about 6 weeks and we've got 2 little 'no-see-ums' (little wee bugs) in our LCD panel.  No idea how to get them out.  I first I thought it was a crack but then when I saw them moving I knew what they were.  The problem is that because of the way the panel is lit, they really stick out.  At this point I also don't know what to do about it.  Thought about getting some kind of blower to see if I could blow them out.  This might have to be done from the inside.  Who knows...

If you figure something out let us know... I'll do the same if I find a way to get rid of mine.

I read this post in amazement.  I have no idea how in the world bugs would get into the LCD panel.  I have not heard of this before.  I would assume they came from the bottom up.  Call your dealer, and ask him to take a look.

I had a little small something there once.  Stayed there for two or three months, then disappeared.  Nothing else since.

It might NOT actually be the LCD panel that you see the spider in.

Look carefully at the panel.  Many panels have a fine plastic "membrane" cover to protect from scratching, etc.  The cover is not tightly sealed and water and other stuff can sometimes get under it.

The membrane can also be customized to display the name of the tub manufacturer by the control manufactuer (Balboa, Gecko, etc.). Without a membrane, customization would be difficult.

I use a hose to flush the panel membrane on my Piper Glen.  The actual panel is a plastic single unit with an internal gasket seal mounted to the underside of the tub shell.

If you already checked for a membrane and it's not the case, SORRY!

The bottom of the control panel is not sealed because sealing it could result in the LCD panel fogging up.  One way to prevent this is to put a screen over the hole in the acrylic that allows water to drain under the panel.

Is there a way to open it up somehow to get the bugs out before trying that?

You can try.  If you take the middle equipment door off and look under the control panel, you can see what you can do.

With all the arguing back and forth that I've read about FF vs TP, metal vs wood studs, open bottom vs closed, wood bottom vs plastic bottom,  etc, etc , etc.     Mother nature still prevails.  So all the arguments accomplished nothing - I guess no one's 100% correct

You are 100% correct when you say that nobody is 100% correct.  If that's possible.

And as a brewman, I gotta score one point for beer in the beer vs wine war. ;)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Crown Royal trumps both beer and wine...   ;D ;D ;D
