240 heating element confusion
« on: June 17, 2016, 02:17:07 pm »
Ok I wanted to make sure a heating element worked, so I took a couple of old ones and just ran 120 to one side of the element and 120 to the other side. But it wouldn't heat up. I hooked 120 to one side then neutral to the other side and then it heated up.,..but when I look at hot tubs that r working properly the heating element has 120 on both sides and it works....so why when I try it out of the heater assembly it only heats up when neutral is hooked up to one side of the element

If you're using the SAME phase of 120v, it won't operate. If it heats on 120v, it'll heat on 240 (PROPER 240v).

If you don't understand this, I'd REALLY suggest a qualified service tech or an electrician.
If you can't sell it on eBay, it may not even qualify as landfill.

Retired (mostly) from the industry after 33 years...but still putzing around with a consumer information website, and trying to sell obsolete owners manuals
