First, to make this relevant.. no mykids did not throw the laptop in the hot tub.

Now that thats taken care of.

Laptop (Campaq Presario R3000) less than a year old... was working fine this morning. Â Went and did dishes (see this is why I should not be allowed to clean... bad things happen) came back screen was black. Â I thought it was hibernating or whatever hit the mouse nothing happend. Â Realized that the monitor Â was just very very dark and not in hibernation mode... I was able to tilt the screen and sit next to a lamp and be able to see enough to shut it down, that didn't fix the problem (thats all the help desk at work used to ever say to do)... rebooted blindly went to control panel, display, everything looks normal. Â

Any ideas? Â Is my darn monitor fried? Â WTF? Â I'm now using my husbands ancient computer... Â Any help greatly appreciated.

check the pixel fluid level!! Have your husband do it. you should be able to see a dipstick in front of the monitor.

Some of the laptops have a little dial that controls the brightness of the display. I'll bet that's it.

I don't see a dial, but I do hope its as simple as that. My concern is that the 18mo old was taking a nap the 5 yr old was at school... so they didn't touch it, how could it just spotaneously happen?

Description
If the notebook is disconnected from the AC adapter while running, the display will dim slightly.
Solution
To conserve battery life, the notebook display brightness will be reduced when disconnected from the AC adapter.
To increase the brightness of the display on battery or AC power, hold the function key ( Fn) down and tap the F8 key.

When they come, take a close look at the FedEx logo. Between the "d" and the "E" is an arrow. It is a subliminal message placed in the logo on purpose. It is supposed to promote feelings of "forward thinking, progress, and rapidity."

I asked them "What about the logo on the other side of the truck that's pointing backwards?"

"Uh, that's us leaving UPS in the dust."

FedEx used to be my biggest customer in my old life. They paid an advertising company $1.8 million to design that logo. I would've done it for half that.

Weird things are happening....

I was using the computer with a desktop monitor this weekend so I could backup my data and get the laptop ready to be shipped off. I left it running Saturday and came back from a soccer game and it was shut off. Then last night I was trying to run virus scan and it was shutting off every 10 minutes or so. After it shut off one of the times (about the 4th time in a row) the monitor came back on.

I realized the pc was running very hot, and I unplugged it from the ac adapter and took it out to the couch so I could watch tv for a bit... it ran for an entire hour without shutting down. THis is the longest it ran all afternoon. I'm guessing the fan or something isn't working. But I still find it bizarre that the backlight came back on, the thing doesn't work when plugged into the AC adpater, but does off the battery... though the battery is draining twice as fast as normal. WTF??? ANy thoughts?

I'm going to contact tech support after I take the kid to school and the electrician comes and goes.

I have the exactly same laptop that is also a year old.

I've had good results so far - no problems - and I use it/travel with it a ton.

I chatted with tech support and they were going to cancel my pick up because the computer is working now. I told them that something obviously is wrong with it since it shouldn't have lost the monitor for 4 days and then have it just shut the power off for 48 hours for no reason. She agreed to pick up the computer for diagnostic testing. It should be picked up tomorrow.
