Sunzone CD Rebuild with MCD-50 renewal kit

Is it possible to rebuild the Sunzone CD ozone generator with a Del MCD-50 renewal kit #9-0743-01? My Sunzone hasn't worked in a while. It's well beyond it's lifetime. With nothing to lose, I took it apart. Here is what I found inside.
1. Two hot lines (240v) and a ground go to a board where one hot wire goes through a fuse for protection.
2. From there, the 240v goes to a transformer that steps down to 110v.
3. From there the 110v goes to the power supply which states AC 120v.
4. That power supply feeds the cell which has no markings.

The Dell renewal kit works for both 120v and 240v @60hz correct? This means the the MCD-50 has a step down transformer also.

The Sunzone CD specs are 240v 30mA 8W 50/60Hz.

It would save me some money if I could do this. The check valve and tubing in the renewal kit is a plus. My only concern is if the Del cell is the same size as the Sunzone cell; otherwise I may need to modify the ozonator box to make the Del cell fit.

Anyone? I did read that you can use part # 5PA0213  to replace the Sunzone innards. This is the replacement part for Del ozonator Eclipse EC-1 EC-2 EC-4. How is that part different from the MCD-50 renewal kit?

I have sent an email to a Del rep to see if he can give me some insight. I'll post what I find out.

Well here is the response I got.

"The MCD-50 (spa, 50 mg/hr) and 5-PA0213 (pool, 250 mg/hr) are different ozone cells.  The swimming pool ozone cell is much larger is size, compared to the smaller MCD-50 cell.

The CDX-24R is not designed to be serviceable.  When the ozone cell eventually wears out, the entire system should be replaced.  I would recommend our next-generation SpaEclipse as a replacement."

I already knew the Sunzone CD wasn't meant to be serviceable. But inside, it's still just a fuse, transformer, power supply, and cell. I would think a replacement kit would work, but he didn't really specify.  I did not realize that the ozonator for the EC series was for pool size; so I did learn something.

The more I read the more confusing it gets. The original Sunzone CD on my 2000 Sundance 850 Cameo has these numbers on the tag:
CDX-24R
240v - 30ma - 8W - 50/60Hz
URFILE# E145687(S)
EPA Estab. No. 071472-CA-001
P/N 4-0382/24R

and this little sticky number on the bottom which I think is a Sundance part #
6472-652

With all of these numbers, I cannot seem to find out what the Ozone rate mg/hr was. Now it gets even more weird. It does seem that 5PA0213 is the guts replacement, yet that is meant for the EC-1 which puts out 250mg/hr. I'm thinking the Sunzone CD was putting out 250mg/hr.

I reread the forum rules and didn't see anything about posting links. Besides, they are all pretty outdated with their pricing but they do verify the part number and cross referencing.

Searching on Del -5-1308-04 yields this link which says I may need to use part 9-0667-01 for earlier models due to the lack of LED indicators. It also supports the idea that this thing was used for High Ozone output for large pools. It is the kit for MCD-250 also.

Searching for 9-0667-01 yields this site which seems to confirm everything. My Sunzone box does NOT have LEDs on it.

Is it possible that Sundance put in an ozonator that was meant to handle a pool with 7,000 - 25,000 gallons rather than a Spa with 550 gallons?

Hhhmmm, Sundance did claim to put out more Ozone than any other manufacturer, and I guess they did. Even their replacement Ozonators today (Jed 103) and Sundance models 6473-150 with Advanced Plasma Gap (APG) are putting out 100mg and 125mg respectively where as most others are at around 30-50mg/hr. I wonder if the Sundance model is a rebadged Del since it uses the APG technology.

If AGP is such a new technology, why am I seeing the MCD-50 higher priced than the Eclipse Next Generation with AGP? Should I be looking at a new system with AGP instead of trying to rebuild my old one?
