My buddy that I play poker with just showed us Monday this nasty "strawberry" he has on his stomach that he got from shooting the potato gun last weekend. I don't know if it was some kind of recoil or the hairspray backfire or what but it was hilarious to see what grown men in their mid 30s still do when dunk off their asses. Anyone see the videos going around where some moron lights off a bottle rocket he is "holding" in his orifice only to quickly realize all it did was burn his ass rather than take off? Gotta love it.

The spud gun has been quarantined thanks to good advice from all of you guys. We will wait to talk to the inovator of this model to assure it is safe to try.  Again, thanks...if I get my kids in the hot tub soon , they may forget about this contraption, I hope!

Looks like a spud gun, but smaller!

Tennis balls........spuds fly further and hit harder. My boys have made them both. They have toyed with the fuel source also and found starting fluid, butane or carb cleaner works much better than hair spray, and gun powder works even better but the more power you create the more problems that crop up. for instance we now use sched. 80 or 160 PVC instead of sched. 40 as the lighter stuff seems to have a tendency to crack and explode whithout notice. We have also devised a remote ignition system so we can get behind a barrier. Also we have increased the barrel length to facilitate better accuracy.

But rebuilding my neighbors chimney (3 blocks away) was a bummer so we go out of town now.

In my younger days, we used lighter fluid.  The gun itself was a series of tin cans taped together, both ends cut off.  The bottom can had one end left on, and a hole punched in the side near the bottom to hold a lit match to fire the thing.  Easy to get a smashed finger or two when the gun recoiled.  It's a wonder we didn't hurt ourselves with that contraption.

Thanksgiving Day and the kids are bummed that the spud gun is a no-go.  My brother in-law is an engineer-checks it out and thinks it looks safe for what they want to do.  I didn't buy the hairspray so they improvise with Axe deodorant.  MY 14 year old got a 12 pt. buck with a potato! Guess what we are having for Christmas dinner?

Bonni if they are interested I can tell them that they are doing it all wrong, what they need to use is the small bottles of propane to propel the spuds it is more powerful and much faster with less chance of burns as it ignites all at once. be prepared for a much more powerful gun. I made these in college and cant go into what we were shooting but the Missoula court house says we did it twice , we must have done it a dozen times.

Disclaimer:
Nevermind I cant be responsible for what may happen tell them to stick with what they have been doing.

Hey Spaman, I have come to the conclusion that my kids
just have to try things once or twice and are satisfied. They used the spud gun a couple of times and now have put it away and said they will wait to use it at the beach this summer. That would be a much safer option shooting off a dock over miles of water. I really don't want anything any more powerful than what they have, but thanks anyway. You mentioned Missoula, are you familiar with the children's theater in Missoula?

The Missoula Children's Theater travels all over the US and over seas promoting theater for kids. My youngest son has been lucky enough to be cast in the production that they do near here for the last three years.  I had never heard of Missoula Montana before he became involved.  This summer we had an opportunity to meet some really great folks from the production company and from Missoula.  As they described the town, I could just imagine this wonderful unspoiled community. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country!
