Did the electrician have to do anything else besides wire the tub? Did he have to up your service in the house? In mass a typical wiring job goes between $800-$1300 depending on how far the run is

If I was given an estimate for $1800 I would get at least two more estimates. Is trenching involved? If so, perhaps this has boosted up the price.
