computer help...
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:21:05 pm »
I know there are lots of computer experts on here..so I am asking for help.. :-\
I have tons of pictures on my hard drive and somehow they have been duplicated so many times that I think they are slowing down my computer and it is probably going to crash!!
Is there a way to remove duplicates across the entire hard drive? For some reason, itunes has also duplicated itself many times.

My computer crashed a while back and maybe some of the duplicates were the result of me trying to restore things from on-line storage as well as an external hard drive.

But now I want to have ONLY one copy of each picture and each song..is there a software program that can do that or do I have to spend HOURS deleting hundreds of pictures?  :o

Thanks,
Boni

Wow, weird... I've seen duplicates before, but multiple duplicates?  This is a new one on me :)

I did some looking, there's a free program that does this here: http://www.codeplex.com/DupliFinder

And a paid one ($26) that gets good reviews at download.com: http://download.cnet.com/Duplicate-Finder/3000-2250_4-10300084.html?tag=mncol

thanks so much...the thought of deleting all those pictures is just making me crazy. I think that some of the problem is because I have multiple photo programs AND when we upload pictures from the cameras of phones, we don't delete them ..so every time we add new pictures all the others copy too. I just realized that recently and changed the settings to only add the new pictures. This is just such a mess right now... :'(

Thanks again!! I'll let you know how it works out ;)

How full is your hard drive?  Many of my customers confuse hard disk space with memory.  You said, "pictures slowing down my computer". This is a common thing I hear.  Pre XP computers, especially Windows 98 and ME did get notoriously slow when the hard drives filled to 95% or more of capacity. Today hard drives are so big and cheap that most of my customers never reach 20% full on their drives. XP does so much better of a job than the older operating systems that I stopped recommending customers defragment their hard drives more than once  year.

Bill I defrag about every 3 months..my hard drive is 32% free. I am removing Adobe Photoshop (it is a pain) and all the photos associated with it. Maybe that will help... I added RAM to this computer about a year ago and usually try to make my computers last 4 years (when the warranty runs out)... :-\

Thats plenty, I'd be looking at spyware/adware issues or unneeded programs in startup. A lot of programs are what I call "rudeware"   They put themselves into the startup folder or the startup section of your registry. You can try running a program called MSCONFIG  and unselect some of the items in the start up group and see if that  helps things run faster.
