How many of you here registered with this forum using an email address from Hotmail, GMAIL, or another web only based email?

I'm glad you mentioned that one.  95% of the spam that gets on this forum is posted by somebody, I am assuming using automated type programming that goes out to the web based email services, generates an email address, logs into forums, and posts that crap. Of all that spam, a significant majority of them use either gmail or hotmail as their email account.  I was thinking of recommending to the owners of the forum that they require another type of email address to register on the forum.  That might prevent some legitimate users from joining though.

They'll just find another address to use and you'll be preventing hundreds or thousands of legitimate people from using the forum. A LOT of people use web based email exclusively.

There are other ways of preventing/reducing  spam, but it requires being able to administer the programming (a step above moderating) and keeping up a constant vigilance.
If you can't sell it on eBay, it may not even qualify as landfill.
