Question for the smarties
« on: September 19, 2005, 12:21:36 am »
Ok....here's the quandry.....

360 degrees are used in a circle etc.......365 days in a year.  Anyone have an answer of why 360 degrees were ultimately decided upon when laid down as "rule"?

Looking back in time offer a possible solution?

The Babylonian numbering system of 4000 years ago was based on 60. Their calendar had 360 days and a complete cycle (or orbit of the sun by Earth) was divided into 360 units.

The ancient Babylonians used a sexagesimal numbering system, with a base of 60, rather than the decimal system we use today (with a base of 10). This is also why there are 60 minutes in an hour, and the hours and months are numbered one to 12.

Maybe it used to take the earth 360 days to orbit the sun but as we all eat more fast food and become slightly larger, oh and there becomes more of us the earth has slowed down and it takes 5 days longer for the sluggish pig to get around the sun????? ;D

When you're doing "doghnuts" or whatever you call them in your car, it sounds much cooler to say you're doing "360's", than "365's".  The 365's just doesn't have the same pizazz.

Here's a good resource for why there is 360 degrees in a circle:

a (non-leap) year consists of 52 weeks plus an extra day. For
a leap year, there will be two extra days, since the remainder of 366 divided by 7 is 2.

That's because the earths rotation around the sun does not take exactly 365 days.  It's more like 365.25 days. If we didn't have a leap year to "Catch up",  the calendar days wouldn't match the "seasonal days" Ie: eventually  We'd be getting Snow on the Juy 4th.

My turn;

Why do we drive on parkways and park and driveways?

If men get him-roids then why don't  women get Her-roids?

Speaking of that who’s idea was it to put asteroids in hemisphere and hemorrhoids on your a$$?

How about this…Was an orange named for the color or was the color named for the fruit?

What’s another word for Thesaurus?

Stuart, you sound like a Steven Wright fan.

I invented powdered water, but I don't know what to mix it with.

I went to the store to get batteries, but they weren't included, so I had to go back.

How about the guy who invented the air-cooled engine for submarines.

Why is it that my dogs can play/run for hours and never have to relieve themselves - but when I take them for a walk as soon as we cross the property line - its time for a dump - no wonder the grass is always greener on the otherside.

Ever wonder how cool it must have been for Adam when the first argument happened in the Garden of Eden......Eve was not able to dredge up past history, confuse him and win.
