To answer your question, the only way to affect "hard" water... is to refill, and fill partially from a softener. I fill mine 50/50. If you do not want to refill right away, use a stain/scale product like Defender. You should also run the pH and alk on the low end, to counter the calcium. I run my pH at 7.2, and the alk at 60.
