Are the filters you put on the garden hose for filling the hot tubs really worth it? Do they do much in the way of really filtering out impurities that make it easier to balance the water?

If you are on a well and/or have issues with your water they can help.

I use one when I fill my tub. I have a water softener and actually turn it off and use the hose filter. I can see iron deposits in the filter, so I know it is working. It just depends on what is in your raw water. I don't think they really filter impurities but maybe some minerals.

I will take a sample to the spa store and see if they can test it and see if the filter can be of benefit. I am on a city water supply, though I do know it is fairly hard water.
