Apart from aesthetics what if any is the benefit of Stainless Steel Jets over what I assume is the standard plastic. Are they worth paying extra for?

It's purely aesthetics.  Once the pumps are on and the water is churning, you can't even see them.  

They are 100% window dressing.

But, if you want a bit of a "wow" factor when you open the tub, or plan on leaving the cover off to show off the tub,  and want a  fancy/dressy look, then that's what they are there for.  

Value and worth are in the eyes of the beholder and your accountant.

I understand them to be more than aesthetic appeal.  I understand they are more mildew/mold repellent.

Mike is correct they are definetely aesthetics more than anything.  I just reordered and new Summitt without the Stainless Steel package for my backyard.

I hate to admit it but I think the SS jet faces do look nice (I'm generally not into blinging up products to make them more appealing) but in the end its 100% aesthetics.

I've seen some use cheaper SS jets on lesser spas that lead to corrosion but the good spa makers use the proper material.

 Besides looking nice they also build/create value in the spa unless you have to pay for them.   You have to admit they do look nicer than a plain old plastic jet,especially when you are comparing spas with them vs not.
    And re-reading your post, the jet itself is not stainless steel, its just a escution over the face of the jet.  If you are wondering??
