Shocking/cleaning filters

Which do you do first? Shock, or clean your filters? So far, I have only rinsed my filter with a strong hose. Is there a recommended filter cleaner I should use? If so, what is it, and how often should I use it?

searchinginfl,
Shock first, wait 48 hour then rinse your filters with a garden hose. Once every four to six weeks clean your filters in a commercial filter cleaner made for hot tub filters. I normally soak mine overnight then rinse them very well with a garden hose. Then soak them overnight in a weak chlorine mix to get anything that may be left over. Your dealer should be able to help you with the recommended filter cleaner. It's a good idea to have a second set of filters so you can clean one while using the other
