Switching Chemicals

Hello All,

I am going to switch chemicals from Dichloro to Bromine, I am going to use a product from brilliance which is called the mermaid which you hang inside your filter compartment it has a dial on it for the setting 1 thru 14. I have a 360 gallon tub what would be a good setting to start with to try and maintain a 4 ppm.

The Mermaid is a prefilled dispenser by Brilliance that replaces a standard floater.  Brilliance is 100% bromine in granular form that is distributed by the same company that makes Baqua Spa chemicals.  The Mermaid has a dial on it to adjust the amount of bromine you want dispensed and little suction cups to attach to the inside of your filter area.

The instructions don't say anything about what settings to use which i don't understand why they would not give you some what of a idea where to start hence my problem.

Start at 14.

Once you have 2-4 ppm, back off to 7.

For what it's worth I'm happy with my switch to Bromine (from dichlor).
It's a heck of a lot less maintence and worry and the santizers work just as good .
Plus don't need to run jets after you get out to mix dichlor.
Now I just get out and close lid. This will be nice in winter.

I went on line to see about this product and does it really only last 1 month. I looked at a place that had a 3 pack of them for $26 (I think) and it seemed awfully expensive.

It seemed like a good idea as I don't like floaters and this would adhere to the inside of the filter compartment.

I guess there's a price to pay for everything!

My floater fits in my filter compartment, which is where i put it when I go in my tub.
Plus it's tied to compartment bay via string so it only stays around the compartment anyway.

It is suppose to fit into your skimmer but it is too big to fit inside my skimmer so I placed it right next to filter intake where that is the second best place to put it according to the instructions. It came with 2 suction cups that you put on the back of it and you just stick on the side of the tub. I don’t like floaters either that is why I went with the mermaid.


The main reason why I went with the Brilliance bromine is because it is 100 % chlorine free. I have been having issues with my skin like itching and red marks. I made posts about it over the winter and every one thought is was because of dry skin, now it is summer and I still am having the same skin problem so I wanted to try something with out chlorine to see if that is what is causing my problem.

If I were to switch to bromine, I think I would use Brilliance, though I would probably try their floater.
