Important!! for any Coast Spa Owners
« on: June 04, 2007, 02:16:43 am »
I think this is news worthy this was posted in the latest Industry mag in Canada

Coast Spas and Franklin Electric Co. Recall Hot Tubs

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington, DC, in co-operation with Coast Spas in Langley, British Columbia and Franklin Electric Company in Bluffton, Indiana, announce a voluntary recall of 8,000 Coast Spas' hot tubs manufactured with Franklin Electric Motors.

Sold at spa dealers from January 2002 through October 2004 for between $7,000 and $15,000, the recalled spas have a circulating pump and motor assembly, which can overheat and pose a fire hazard. The recall only affects spas that were manufactured during this time frame with either red or yellow pump and motor assemblies.

Coast Spas has received 30 reports of spa fires, although no injuries have been reported.

The spas were manufactured in Canada, and the motors and pump assemblies were manufactured in the U.S. Consumers should contact Coast Spas immediately to arrange for the installation of a free retrofit by a service technician.

For more information, Coast Spas has set up a Web site at www.spamotorretrofit.com or simply call toll-free (877) 534-5255.

I pity any of "his" customers should any of his spas ever have a recall.

What a nightmare that would be.

So it's not just Coast going through this recall? WOW... :o

Anyone know what other manufacturers utilize these pumps? Does Jimmy really use them too? OMG

Does this mean that we can expect to see Hot Spring start posting that Haven tubs are starting fires and burning down houses?   :)

I don't know. I belive the link I posted (I took it from Pathfinder's post and  linked it for our convience)  is a Coast page.   A very quick search of Franklins web site gave me no info any a recent recall.

I do know that Jimmbo uses pumps with Franklin motors.  If he uses these circ pumps, I do not know.   It he does, it would be ironic, to say the least.   Jim's been quiet lately and I personaly belive he's down for the count as far as seeling spas.

Sure is a desert on his board, especially in the past week.  Surprised he hasn't put tumbleweed and crickets chirping on his web site.

I didn't find anything regarding a recall on Franklin's website, either.

That must be some Ultra Super Deluxe Custom business plan, to refuse to sell to a customer.

You're not worthy, You're not worthy!!

No doubt you'll be better off not having any business doings with that guy.

I'm curious, and have to ask (sorry to try and get back on topic :-)  )

Who do you feel is responsible for this pump issue? Coast Spas, or Franklin?
If you can't sell it on eBay, it may not even qualify as landfill.

Retired (mostly) from the industry after 33 years...but still putzing around with a consumer information website, and trying to sell obsolete owners manuals

Well, if anyone else is using this pump it would point toward Franklin.  However, one would have to wonder how Coast was using it.  Was it installed some way to create the issue.

When Watkins had their heater issue they told us it was a wiring issue that was done by the vender.

Not sure who you're asking, but in my opinion, the ultimate responsibility lies on Franklin.  They sold Coast Spas a batch of bad motors.

Coast is responsible to the consumer to get the spas fixed, and Franklin should reimburse Coast for it's costs.

Consumer should get safe motors for no out of pocket.  That's what they originally paid for.

I'm real.  I go there once in a while just to say hello.  I even wished Jim a happy birthday in April.
